SUPRA Nordic Scholarship
NB: The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that physical visits to NIAS are not currently possible. Consequently, the SUPRA Nordic Scholarship has moved online and is now known as the Virtual SUPRA Programme!
The Virtual SUPRA Programme has been expanded and improved and now includes:
- Four week programme of virtual sessions
- Individual academic mentoring
- Presentation of thesis work with feedback
- Thorough introduction to the AsiaPortal resources
- Sessions on publishing and career development
- How to create an academic presence online
- Academic podcasts – what to do and what to say
The same application form applies; please state your preferred four-week period instead of two weeks.
Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
The SUPRA Nordic scholarship is one of the most important features of NIAS' Support Programme for Asian Studies. It is designed to make NIAS’ digital library and other resources accessible to PhD candidates and MA students in the Nordic countries. The scholarship covers inexpensive travel to and from Copenhagen and accommodation in a NIAS room at Nordisk Kollegium, with full board for a period of two weeks (or up to one month for PhD candidates). Stays are subject to a time schedule administered by NIAS.
A dynamic research environment
With around 50 visiting SUPRA students every year, the SUPRA programme not only provides students with an opportunity to spend time at a progressive research institute. The people visiting through the SUPRA programme also contribute to making NIAS the dynamic research institute it is.
Resources at NIAS
The librarians at NIAS will give the SUPRA students a comprehensive introduction to the use of the NIAS LINC resources. The students will have at their disposal a suitably equipped work place, and access to all the facilities at NIAS. They will be encouraged to interact with NIAS researchers and will have the opportunity to make a short lunchtime presentation for NIAS staff and receive expert advice.
Other benefits include specific thesis advice, invitations to participate in seminars and workshops, and a discount on NIAS Press publications [links til seminarer og workshops samt publikationer mangler].
The application deadlines for the scholarship are 1 June and 1 October.
NB: The application deadline for a spot in the Autumn semester of 2021 has been extended to 15 June 2021!
Master Students: Apply for a stay of two weeks. Please specify your preferred dates in the application. Stays are available between 1 February and the end of June 2021.
PhD Candidates: Apply for a stay from two weeks up to one month. Please specify your preferred dates in the application. Stays are available between 1 February and the end of June 2021.
Students from institutions belonging to the Nordic NIAS Council (NNC) will have priority access to fully-financed NIAS SUPRA scholarships. Students from institutions outside the NNC are also eligible, but will have to cover their travel expenses to and from Copenhagen.

NB: In case of complications due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SUPRA Scholarship can become a virtual affiliation instead.
