We know, of course, that the institute does not belong to us and has other tasks to perform than those, which are generally carried out by our institutes and departments. The Minister of Education has described the goals and activities of this institute as part of a wider effort of cultural cooperation within the countries of Scandinavia. Not only do we acknowledge that obligation, but we accept it as an expression of confidence from our cousins in spirit and geography that we are to be entrusted with a sanctuary for the growth of mutual enlightenment and education in Asian studies.

Mogens Fog, Rector of University of Copenhagen, Opening Ceremony for NIAS, 1968
