Chinese workers in the mainstream media
An examination of how major Chinese newspapers have portrayed workers’ issues over the past decade. Speaking to issues of ideology, propaganda, and representation, the project investigates which kinds of worker action make it into the major newspapers and why? What are the underlying narratives guiding the representation of workers in the mainstream media? How have these changed over the past decade? And how does the coverage of contentious worker action vary between newspapers closely affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party as opposed to more marketized newspapers?
