How to Use the Library

NIAS LINC online

To facilitate access to online information on modern Asia, NIAS LINC has created the AsiaPortal. This portal is a collection of high-quality academic resources comprising both free resources and access to restricted databases and journals for our Nordic NIAS Council partner institutions.

At the AsiaPortal you can find:

  • Over 490 online journals about Asia, most with full-text access
  • More than 70 databases in Western and Asian languages
  • Asian newspapers for online reading
  • Nordic publications on Asia in full text
  • Opinions, analysis and comments on current topics in Asia from Nordic scholars and journalists
  • Information on research institutes and researchers in the Nordic region
  • Nordic Asian studies links
  • Tips for literature searching and researcher tools

We also provide a platform for networking for Asia scholars in the Nordic region via the Barha community.

NIAS Library

The NIAS Library is open to the public and holds the largest collection of books and journals for the study of modern Asia within the social sciences in the Nordic region. The collection is largely available on open shelves and contains 38 000 books in Western languages, and more than 1400 periodicals.

The collection is freely accessible and searchable as a part of the Danish Royal Library's database REX, through the Danish library database bibliotek.dk, and WorldCat.

A guided introduction to the library and its resources can be arranged on request, and you are always welcome to come and talk to our knowledgeable information specialists.

Borrowing books

NIAS Library is part of the Royal Library's lending system. If you are already registered as a user at the Royal Library or at the University of Copenhagen, you do not need any other registration or special NIAS library card.

If you are not registered, please register at the Royal Library's website. Please note that you need a Danish CPR-number to complete the registration. If you do not have a Danish CPR-number, please contact the library for further information.

We also provide interlibrary loans to all Nordic libraries. The NIAS library is fully integrated into the public library service system, which guarantees fast delivery through interlibrary-loan facilities such as Netpunkt and the Danish and Scandinavian transportation agreement.

With the exception of a small number of reference books, our books are available for home loan for one month, renewable for up to six months. You can find a more detailed description on the rules and regulations for borrowing at the Royal Library website.
