We welcome two new SUPRA Students at NIAS!

Eva Coratella is an Italian student of University of Turku, Finland. She is working on her Master’s thesis “From the Great Famine to the Food Waste: The Role of Memory in the Rise of Awareness.” She has conducted fieldwork in Shanghai as a language student of Fudan University. The purpose of her research is to investigate whether the memory of the Mao’s Great Famine (1958-1961) has had an influence on the eating behaviour of the Maoist generation. Moreover, the research analyses whether an intergenerational transfer of memory between the elder and the present generation has occurred.



Lars Olav Aaberg is a Norwegian master student in Gender Studies at Centre for Gender Research at University of Oslo. He is also a student affiliate at Norsk Institutt for By- og Regionforskning (NIBR) in Oslo. His master thesis examines the construction of masculinities in an urban slum in the context of a women-specific self-help group in Kerala, South India. His thesis is largely based on ethnographic data he gathered during an extensive fieldwork period in Kerala while a Research Affiliate at Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram.
